Thyatira was famous throughout the empire for its exquisite fabrics, but to earn a living there one had to belong to one of its guilds. This immediately put the Christians in a situation similar to that in Corinth regarding food sacrificed to the pagan gods (1 Corinthians 8:1-13; 10:14-22).
