When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. – Proverbs 11:2

Whoever becomes lifted up with pride, for whatever reason, count on it, they will be brought down. God hates pride more than anything, for what do we have that we have not received? All talent, beauty, knowledge and strength is given from above. That person who takes credit for what was given them will most assuredly be put to shame. The proud, beautiful woman will grow old and ugly. The proud, strong man will someday be without the strength to stand. That proud, wise man will soon forget his own name. “But with the lowly is wisdom.” The lowly man understands that, “by the grace of God” . . . he is what he is, has what he has, knows what he knows; he knows that he knows nothing, has nothing, is nothing in himself . . . and so humbles himself and is lowly before God With that (lowly) man is wisdom. And that man will never be put to shame, but will dwell with God forever.

Trembling At The Word of God -- “ . . . To this man will I look, even to him that is poor

and of a contrite spirit and TREMBLETH AT MY WORD.” – Isaiah 66:2

There is little trembling at the Word. It is a solemn thing for a man to be spoken to by God, the God of heaven and earth. Each word coming from His lips should be listened to and received with profoundest reverence. “The Lord hath spoken” is enough for us. There is no room for question or cavil where His voice is heard. Each word in the Bible is to be dealt with as a sacred thing, as a vessel of the sanctuary, not to be lightly handled or profanely mutilated, but to be received just as it stands. There may be passages difficult to reconcile, doctrines which apparently conflict with each other. But let us beware of smoothing down, of hammering in pieces, one class of passages in order to bring about a reconciliation. Let us be content to take them as they are. We shall gain nothing by explaining them away. God has spoken them. God has placed them there. They cannot really be at variance with each other. The day is coming when we shall fully understand their harmony. Let us wait till then, and meanwhile tremble at the thought of misinterpreting or distorting so much as one jot or tittle. Most assuredly we shall not bring about the agreement in any such way. We are only widening the breach and opening but new difficulties. – Horatio Bonar, Scotland, 1808-1889

No Failure

‘Not as though the Word of God hath taken no effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: neither because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, in Isaac shall Thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed’-Rom.9:6-8

God’s Purpose Has Not Failed (v.11) – The purpose of God according to election has not failed. It was not God’s purpose to save everyone . . . only those chosen in Christ by election. Do not be alarmed because we live in a day of spiritual barrenness. God’s purpose will not fail. God’s purpose in evangelism is to bring in the elect, and He shall!

God’s Promise Has Not Failed (v.8) - All the descendants of Abraham are not the children of God and of promise. God promised a ‘spiritual seed’ (Gal.3:29). God’s promise is being fulfilled.

The Preaching of The Gospel Has Not Failed . . . Will Not Fail! - The elect will be saved through the preaching of The Gospel. It is God’s will and God’s way the elect are called (v.11). – Samuel William (Bill) Clark, Ireland, 1923-1998
