The following quotes are all by Thomas Brooks, pastor in England (1608-1680). He was one of Spurgeon’s favorite writers . . . and mine as well

Quotes From a Wise Man

-- “Everything that a man leans upon but God, will be a dart that will certainly pierce his heart through and through.

He who leans only upon Christ, lives the highest, choicest, safest, and sweetest life.”

-- “Humility makes a man richer than other men, and it makes a man judge himself the poorest among men.”

-- “Though there is nothing more dangerous, yet there is nothing more ordinary, than for weak saints to make their

sense and feeling the judge of their condition. We must strive to walk by faith.”

-- “Christ is to be answerable for all those that are given to Him, at the last day, and therefore we need not doubt but

that He will certainly employ all the power of His Godhead to secure and save all those that He must be accountable

for. Christ's charge and care of these that are given to Him, extends even to the very day of their resurrection, that

He may not so much as lose their dust, but gather it together again, and raise it up in glory to be a proof of His

fidelity; for, saith He, "I shall lose nothing, but raise it up again at the last day."

-- “Prayer crowns God with the honor and glory due to His name, and God crowns prayer with assurance and

comfort. The most praying souls are the most assured souls.

-- “God's hearing of our prayers doth not depend upon us, but upon Christ's intercession; not upon what we are in

ourselves, but what we are in the Lord Jesus; both our persons and our prayers are acceptable in the Beloved.”

-- “A humble soul looks upon Christ's righteousness as his only crown.”

-- “Christ is lovely, Christ is very lovely, Christ is most lovely, Christ is always lovely, Christ is altogether lovely.”

From Henry Mahan’s commentaries:

The Truth Which is After Godliness – “Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness.”

The gospel is ‘a doctrine of godliness.’ The truth of it and experience of it have an influence that promotes internal and external godliness, leads to the worship and fear of God and results in a sober, honest and sincere conduct and way of life. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

-- 2 Corinthians 5:17

Christ, The Water of Life

Life here on earth depends upon water. This is the only planet with water therefore the only planet with life. We are born, created, formed in the womb in water; come forth with that water, continue all our lives drinking, bathing, and living on water. Christ is called the water of life. Eternal life depends upon Him. The child of God is born again by the Water of God’s Word, which is the Gospel of Christ. We begin this new life thirsting and drinking in the Gospel of Christ, bathing our weary souls and filthy flesh in His Gospel. We then live the rest of our lives in Him, on Him . . . the Water of Life.

The Samaritan woman brought her water pot to a well for water. Christ, the true Water then spoke to her and filled her with Himself, the Water of Life. She never did take a drink from that well; she now has a Well of Water in her, which is Christ. The impotent man was waiting on the moving of the waters, when Christ came and raised him to life. He never got in that pool of water but now was in the Water and that Water in Him, which is Christ. Yes, Christ is the Water of Life.
