Mark Him Down as a Proud Man!
One way in which a really humble Christian shows himself, is by having a high opinion of others. Paul says, "In lowliness of mind--let each esteem other better than himself." "Honor one another above yourselves." Whenever you see a person who appears to take every opportunity of putting down others--mark him down as a proud man--and be sure that he does it in order to exalt himself! On the other hand, whenever you see anyone anxious to hide his brother's failings, unwilling to expose his little defects--you will generally find that he is a humble man, and one who deeply feels the many faults of his own character. -- Ashton Oxenden 1884
When we destroy the false hopes of religious men; when we expose their false refuges and their foundations of sand; when we attempt to give God all the glory for saving sinners; unsaved religionists will rise up in arms and try to silence us or persuade us to lay down the sword of the Lord and let them sleep on in peace. But the servant of the Lord knows that His gospel is the savour of life to some and the savour of death to others and men cannot remain neutral to the gospel of God's glory. – Henry Mahan
I have read of Caesar, that, having prepared a great feast for his nobles and friends, it fell out that the day appointed was so extremely foul that nothing could be done to the honor of their meeting; whereupon he was so displeased and enraged, that he commanded all them that had bows to shoot up their arrows at Jupiter, their chief god, as in defiance of him for that rainy weather; which, when they did, their arrows fell short of heaven, and fell upon their own heads, so that many of them were very sorely wounded. So all our mutterings and murmurings, which are so many arrows shot at God himself, will return upon our own pates, or hearts; they reach not him, but they will hit us; they hurt not him, but they will wound us therefore, it is better to be mute than to murmur; it is dangerous to contend with one who is a consuming fire. -- Thomas Brooks, 1608-1680
Martin Luther's strength lay in the way in which he laid the burden of the Reformation upon the Lord. Continually in prayer he pleaded, "Lord, this is thy cause, not mine. Therefore, do thine own work; for if this gospel do not prosper, it will not be Luther alone who will be a loser, but thine own name will be dishonored." – copied
A congregation cannot be said to welcome the Lord Jesus unless they are all there, which requires punctuality; unless they have come with design to meet Him, which implies prayerful expectancy; unless they are ready to hear from Him, which involves attention; and unless they are resolved to accept His teaching, which demands obedience. – Charles Spurgeon
Noah was called a preacher of righteousness. For 120 years he preached a holy and righteous God, and Christ the believer’s righteousness. Think about it. He preached for 120 years and did not see one convert . . . not one! Not one person came into that ark, except his family. But then. Imagine how grateful Noah was for those 7 souls . . . his family. I’ll bet Noah continued preaching afterward . . . to just 7 souls. And he was mighty thankful for his little congregation.

We are most like God when we forgive.” - unknown
