In the original Greek, Colossians chapter one verse nine is an even more weighty statement than we have in our English Bible. For that reason, I want to break it down into a series of propositional statements that are well supported by the original text. There are six of them.
In today's message we'll only have time to cover the first two, but as we go on in future messages we'll cover the remainder, and then we'll bring them all together. So here are the propositions:
1. Believing the Gospel of Christ is the thing that makes knowledge of God's will possible.
2. Precise and correct knowledge of God's will is possible.
3. Precise and correct knowledge of God's will comes because of two things – prayer, and study of the Word of God.
4. Knowledge of God's will involves wisdom in the general sense.
5. Knowledge of God's will involves understanding in the specific sense, and it is an understanding that involves the Christian joining various aspects of God's revelation together in the mind.
6. The Christian's knowledge of God's will is infinitely superior to the world's false, speculative knowledge and wisdom.
