Jesus said to the Church at Laodicea, "Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline." How do I know that Jesus loves me? Revelation 3:19 gives the answer. That's the same answer given to us in Hebrews 12:4-8. Those who are left alone in their sin and unbelief until it is too late are not God's children (Hebrews 12:8); God's children are harassed to the point they cannot live on and on in sin (Hebrews 12:5-7).
Laodicea was a self-satisfied church. Yet any member had the privilege of fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ (Revelation 3:20). Think of it: No matter how imperfect a church, any earnest Christian can be used of God to see renewal and revival.
Where did the greatest prophet of the Old Testament, Elijah who represented all the prophets on the Mount of Transfiguration alongside Moses witnessing the Lord Jesus' transformation (Matthew 17:1-3) serve? He served in the apostate northern kingdom of Israel, not in the more biblically based southern kingdom of Judah (1 Kings 17:1).
We are also struck with the LORD's disregard for the ceremonial law in how he provided for Elijah, because he fed him by means of unclean, carrion eating birds (1 Kings 17:2-4; Leviticus 11:15; Deuteronomy 14:14).
