This is the 174th anniversary of the founding of the Scotland Presbyterian Church in Junction City, Arkansas. More importantly, it is also the 1,989th anniversary of founding of the Church in its New Testament form on the Day of Pentecost.
When we compare the work of the Holy Spirit on people in the Old Testament with his work on the Church in its New Testament form, we discover that most believers knew little of the power of the Spirit: He came on a few, not on the many.
Also, with a couple of exceptions, such as Deborah and Huldah, women were strangers to the infilling of the Spirit. But with the dawning of the New Covenant, the Spirit manifested himself in people such as Elizabeth, Anna, and Mary.
This was the fulfillment Joel had prophesied: Women as well as men, the young as well as the old, would be filled with the Holy Spirit and equipped to reach a lost and dying world with the life-changing gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. |
