As we consider God's giving the northern kingdom of Israel a certificate of divorce in Jeremiah 3:8, we are reminded of several passages of Scripture, the first of which is Deuteronomy 24:1-4.
Then we turn to Deuteronomy 22:13-20, where we discover the importance of a woman's parents being able to prove she was a virgin when she married.
Then we look at the penalties for various sexual sins in Deuteronomy 22:21-29, and from there we look at Exodus 22:16-17, and we are compelled to conclude that women were essentially chattel with very few rights under the Old Testament.
In Matthew 19:8, Jesus explains that these laws were designed for hard-hearted, legalistic people. That is they refracted God's character in dealing with people who often did not know God.
In John 8:7, Jesus demands that a person be without sin in order to cast the stone at the adulterous woman. He alone was without sin, and he freed her in John 8:10-11.
