While people who live in open defiance of God and his Word have no right to believe they are saved, regardless of what they have prayed or experienced in the past, it is normal that those who have turned from their sins and cast themselves on God's mercy in Christ in simple faith should know for certain that they are saved and on their way to heaven. The doctrine of election should never be a barrier to assurance. How do I know that I am elect? The answer is found in the promise of God to all who want to be saved: 'Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.' (Revelation 22:17.) If I have put my trust in the Lord Jesus, I am elect; I am saved; I am going to go to heaven.
