Judah was fourth in line for the inheritance. Many of Joseph's brothers wanted Joseph gone because they saw him as a threat since he was his father's favored son. But it is Judah even more than Joseph who prefigures Christ in the Genesis narrative. Judah has a flawed past but is willing to give up his life in the end in order to save Benjamin -- who really was his enemy in many respects.
