Free-Will, False Religion Confronted – By Joseph Irons, England, 1785-1852
Never was there a time in which a bold stand for the distinguishing doctrines of grace was more needed than now; for while Popery is rapidly spreading, and infidelity growing, what is called “the religious world” is contenting itself with the shell of Christianity, to the almost entire neglect of the kernel; yea, in instances, not a few, to the despising of the kernel, as if it were a dangerous, if not a poisonous thing. Proud free will is enthroned – creature capability is extolled – and external show of literature, ceremonies, and splendid buildings are become the idols of the multitude. It is, therefore, imperative that the few veterans, who know and love the truth of God, should confront the traitor free will, with the boldest statements of God’s free grace; war with the deception of man’s capabilities by insisting upon the helplessness of fallen man, and the efficiency of the Holy Spirit’s operations, exalting Christ alone as the salvation of God, freely given in covenant love – fully accomplished by atoning blood, and fixed immovably in the heart of every elect vessel of mercy by the invincible power of the Holy Ghost.
These are the only weapons that are “mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” Popery and infidelity laugh at the meagre Christianity of the great bulk of professing Protestants . . . but no Cardinal nor Priest dare meet the truth of God, nor a man of truth.
TRUE DOCTRINE --Horatius Bonar, Scotland, 1808-1889
On true doctrine rests the worship of the true and living GOD. There is a tendency among many religious people to undervalue true doctrine, to exalt morality at the expense of the character of GOD and the teachings of our Lord, and to deny the importance of a sound creed. I do not doubt that sound creed has often covered an unsound life. But when I hear it said, “Such and such do not believe the doctrines of sovereign grace and substitution, but they love the Lord and are saved,” I wonder and ask, “What then was the Bible written for?” Is it no infallible expression of the mind of GOD? Is it no standard of Truth? Are we to believe what appeals to us and deny the rest? GOD FORBID! GOD’S Word declares the oneness of Truth and condemns every departure from the Truth as a DIRECT ATTACK ON GOD HIMSELF! Do not tell me that a man’s heart is right with GOD when his head contains a creed of error and denies the PERSON AND WORK OF THE REDEEMER.
The gospel of grace stands upon two pillars, namely, what Christ did for us in His flesh, and what He performs in us by His Spirit. -John Newton
I remember as a child, visiting my grandparents in the little country town of Tecumseh, Georgia. They lived in a farm house right beside the railroad tracks. My two brothers and I would often sleep together in a big old feather bed. The first few times we slept there, when that train came through we all thought it was going to run right over us. We couldn’t hardly sleep. It was frightening. But after a few nights, we didn’t hear that train at all. We slept without fear.
Brothers and sisters, I fear at times that some don’t hear a Word that is being preached from this pulpit. Bless God, some hear the Word and tremble, but some make no response at all. Some literally sleep through the Word of the living God being proclaimed. I fear for those who do; that they are sleeping the sleep of death. Oh may the Lord quicken us according to His Word, before it is everlastingly too late.
