Who Are Your Companions?

"I am a companion of all them that fear Thee, and them that keep Thy precepts . . ." (Psalm 119:63)

I know that most of you are faithful to the Sunday worship services, and you tarry after the services to visit and talk with one another. But what about the other six days of the week? Do you have much fellowship with those whose conversation is seasoned with grace and are a good influence on you and your children? The people of the world (religious world and social world) ARE NOT an influence for good or spiritual growth. "Evil companions and associations corrupt good character."

(1 Corinthians 15.33) . But our brethren comfort us, encourage us, instruct us; and regular fellowship with them and their families will be a great blessing to you and your children. Do not spend your social and family time with those who do not know God (86% of the week), and expect to correct the effect with a couple of hours on Sunday. As much time as you devote to good fellowship in Christ with other believers will reap great blessings to you and your family. - Henry Mahan

God's Word Shall Lead You ---"When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee;

and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee." (Proverbs 6:22)

These are the words of a father and mother to their children concerning the written Word of God. This parent, a believer in Christ, is persuaded of the ability of God's Word, with His blessing to lead, keep, and talk. They would impress this upon their children. God's Word shall lead you. It will LEAD you out of the way "which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." The way of works religion seems right, but man's works being imperfect will always end in death. The Word shall lead you to the way, the Lord Jesus Christ that is also the truth and the life, the only way to God. It shall KEEP you when you sleep. The believer in Christ being reconciled through Him to God is able to lay down and sleep in peace. "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety (Psalms 4:8.) It will also TALK to you. God's word speaks to us as we read and hear it. I don't know how many times I have been told after a service something to this effect. "God answered my question in your message," or "You dealt with something in your message that has troubled me." I brought a message recently from Proverbs, and could not help but think after the message, "I wish that all of our young families with children had heard this message." It seemed to me such a shame that they missed it. Every service that a person misses he cheats himself of necessary food. He misses that opportunity of hearing God speak to him from that passage. -- David Pledger

F 'My sin is ever before me' [Psalm 51.3]. A humble soul sees that he can stay no more from sin, than the heart can from panting, and the pulse from beating. He sees his heart and life to be fuller of sin, than the firmament is of stars; and this keeps him low. He sees that sin is so bred in the bone, that till his bones, as Joseph's, be carried out of the Egypt of this world, it will not out. Though sin and grace were never born together, and though they shall not die together, yet while the believer lives, these two must live together; and this keeps him humble. -- Thomas Brooks

"Sin Shall Not Have Dominion Over You . . ." -- Romans 6:14

The Lord did not say sin shall not be in you, but it shall not have dominion over you. He did not say Satan shall not try you, tempt you, accuse you and harass you, but He shall not have dominion over you. He did not say you shall be free from all the allurements and enticements of this world; free from lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life, but these things shall not have dominion over you. Why? Because of our strivings? Our efforts? No, because the believer in Christ is under the dominion and rule of the God of all grace. Though once ruled by sin and Satan, no more! God is the Father of His children and sends His Spirit to keep them from the dominion of sin, Satan and the world. Thank God.
