In Everything Give Thanks

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” -- 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Lord, teach us what the word “everything” means. It would be very easy for us, in our sinful and doubtful flesh, to insert the words “some things” into that verse. In some things, we do give thanks. In most things however, we don’t. Usually, we murmur over things, we complain over things, we question things, and we try our hardest to change things. We do this because our sinfully blind eyes do not see the hand of the Lord in it. We do this because, sinfully, we are not trusting that He is doing right in it. We do this because, sinfully, we are doubtful that good will come from it. Lord, we believe, help our unbelief! Teach us to have a single eye on You, and Your perfect purpose, and Your all knowing, all controlling, sovereign will. Teach us that everything is being done by You, through You, to You. Therefore, EVERYTHING is for Your glory and our good. If we could truly see that... in everything, we would give thanks! -- Gabe Stalnaker

Think on These Things -- Philippians 4:8

Whatsoever things are true—agreeable to the truth in Christ Jesus, the gospel, and the Word of God.

Whatsoever things are honest—honest in the sight of God and men, honest in business, speech, and conduct.

Whatsoever thing are just—Christ is the Just One, enabling God to be just and justifier; but our thoughts should also be concerned with justice for the oppressed.

Whatsoever thing are pure—pure in word and deed, in opposition to carnality, vulgarity, and lust. Whatsoever things are holy, agreeable to the character of God and his kingdom, the things which promote unbroken fellowship with God in Christ.

Whatsoever things are lovely—these are faith, joy, love, and all the fruits of the Spirit.

Whatsoever things are of good report—things that contribute to faith, a good name, a good reputation, and unity of purpose.

If anything is virtuous and worthy of praise, think on it, for “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he!”

-- Henry Mahan

All Things– excerpt from A.W. Pink’s book, ‘the Sovereignty of God.’

Without a doubt a world-crisis is at hand, and everywhere men are alarmed. But God is not! He is never taken by surprise. It is no unexpected emergency which now confronts Him, for He is the One who “worketh all things after the counsel of His own will” (Ephesians 1:11). Hence, though the world is panic-stricken, the word to the believer is, “Fear not”! “All things” are subject to His immediate control: “all things” are moving in accord with His eternal purpose, and therefore, “all things” are “working together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” It must be so, for “of Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things” (Romans 2:36). Yet how little is this realized today even by the people of God! Many suppose that He is little more than a far-distant Spectator, taking no immediate hand in the affairs of earth. It is true that man has a will, but so also has God. It is true that man is endowed with power, but God is all-powerful. It is true that, speaking generally, the material world is regulated by law, but behind that law is the law-Giver and law-Administrator. Man is but the creature. God is the Creator, and endless ages before man first saw the light “the mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) existed, and ere the world was founded, made His purpose; and being infinite in power and man only finite, His purpose and will cannot be withstood or thwarted by the creatures of His own hands.
