Walter Groover
“Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel.” – 2 Samuel 3:38
The church has lost a prince and a great man in Walter Groover. The Lord came for His faithful servant on Thursday morning. Much can be said about our brother but words are not sufficient to honour the man. We can only say with our Lord, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” Our hearts and prayers are for Betty and her children and grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
“The righteous perish, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.” – Isaiah 57:1-2
Godly Sorrow
Godly sorrow springs from a view of a suffering Savior, and manifests itself by hatred of self, abhorrence of sin, groaning over our backslidings, grief of soul for being so often entangled by our lusts and passions, and is accompanied by softness, meltings of heart, flowings of love to the Redeemer, indignation against ourselves, and earnest desires never to sin more.
– Philpot
True Faith
Those who have that faith which is the gift of God, that faith which comes through hearing the Word of God – one need not be troubled about them trusting in their faith. This faith causes those who have it – without exception – to renounce themselves and trust entirely in Christ the Saviour. This faith causes self to be abhorred and Christ adored. Those who have this faith could never trust in their faith. -- Maurice Montgomery
How to Avoid Times of Depression – by Henry Mahan
“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” - Jude 1:20-21
Someone asked, "How can I avoid these times of depression, indifference, and bad attitude toward others?" First, there is no perfection in the flesh! While we do not approve of our infirmities, failures, evil thoughts, or backslidings, we are, nevertheless, aware of their source; the flesh. And, because of that, we are also aware of the fact that this conflict and warfare will be with us until death. However, the next time you are plagued with coldness of spirit, prolonged bad attitude, and a worldly spirit, check and see if you are not neglecting the means of grace and your fellowship with Christ.
I find that when I am walking with Christ in sweet communion, frequently engaging in private prayer, participating in worship services and Bible study, and reading the Word of God, it is easier to forgive others, easier to overcome pride, envy, and jealousy, and I am less interested in material things and more interested in that which is of the Spirit. But if I neglect these means of grace I suddenly become more interested in those things which I really despise and begin acting in a way that is not glorifying to God.
If we will learn the power of his precious blood, dwell in him, feed upon his Word, and seek to occupy our thoughts with his gracious presence, then we will see our tempers controlled, our hearts filled with love for him and others, and our feet and hands swift to do works of faith and labors of love.
