Our longtime brother and friend, Henry Sword, went to be with the Lord last Tuesday morning. He was 85 years old. Henry and Roberta Sword are founding members of this church and have been faithful in supporting the gospel for many, many years. Brother Henry will be sadly missed by Roberta and family, this church, and all who knew him. The Lord gave him a long and good life here and now he has entered into his rest.

We thank the Lord for Henry Glenford Sword.

A Lament For The Death Of The Righteous

The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.” Isaiah 57:1-2

Oh! did men know what the world loses when a good man dies, they would regret it far more than the death of emperors and kings who fear not God. But as for those who are made righteous by the grace of God, they need not fear to die. To them it will be a rest — a sleep with Jesus Christ — till the trump of the resurrection, and all the evil that will come upon the world will not touch them. They shall rest till the Master comes. – Charles Spurgeon

Faith Cometh By Hearing – “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” – Romans 10:17

The preaching of the gospel of Christ is the soul-saving ordinance. It is not through the eye but rather through the ear that salvation comes to men. “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.”

In every age God has raised up men to faithfully proclaim His gospel of grace. Elijah may ascend but his mantle fell to Elisha. Paul may die but not until Timothy is trained and on the field.

The true preacher of God’s gospel has a rightful claim on your attention. If God has sent him, men should . . . and must . . hear him, for he who preaches Christ crucified has life flowing from his lips. And he who hears will find life flowing in his heart and soul. “God hath chosen by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”( 1 Cor.1:21) – Henry Mahan

Encouragement

I have found that even the saints are prone to dwell too much upon the things that discourage. At least this is my experience. It is good to be able to confide in one another and talk about things that trouble us. But it is not good to let our burdens and difficulties become a load that we carry and a burden that we always place upon the brethren. If we would stop and consider, for every burden that the child of God has, there are ten thousand blessings! And all these blessings are in Christ! If we have burdens and trials (and every child of God does), in the long run they will prove to have been a blessing from God. Never make light of a brother’s complaints nor brush them off and ignore him, but try to encourage him by speaking of the good things, the things we have in Christ, such as life, peace, righteousness, and redemption. We must continually remind ourselves and others, that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose(Rom.8:28). – By Tom Robbins, dear pastor and friend, stricken with cancer and passed away in 2011

“ A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth” – Eccl.7:1

“ A believer’s last day is his best day.” – Thomas Brooks
