Grace – by John Flavel, England, 1627-1691
Grace will not allow the strong to boast, nor the weak to despair.
Grace will not allow the mature to presume, nor the young to doubt God’s love.
Grace will never catalogue sin --- No sin is so small that it will go unpunished without His blood, and
no sin too great that His blood won’t atone.
Grace opens the door wide for all who believe on our Lord Jesus Christ, and shuts the door of mercy to
all who do not believe.
“Be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2).
The word “world” means the nature, the opinions, the goals, and the attitudes of natural men and women. The believer lives in the world, works and associates with worldly people; therefore, he faces constant pressure and temptation to be and do what the world is and does.
The world seeks the praise and favor of men; the believer seeks the praise and favor of God. The worldling thinks only of himself; and the believer considers others. The world cares only for the body, its desires and needs; and the believer is concerned for his soul. The world believes and is concerned only with what is seen (which is temporal); the believer believes and rests only in that which is unseen (which is eternal). The world cries, “What shall we eat, drink, and wear;” the believer cries, “Feed me with food convenient for me; lest I be full and deny Thee, and say who is the Lord? or lest I be poor and steal and take the name of the Lord in vain” (Prov. 30:9). But above all, “That I may win Christ and be found in Him, clothed in His righteousness and washed in His blood.” The spiritual walk and attitude can only be accomplished by “a renewing of your mind,” or the regenerating work of God in mind and soul (Titus 3:5). – Henry Mahan
To be saved from sins is to be saved from ignoring and despising the authority of God. It is to abandon the course of self-will and self-pleasing. It is to forsake our way; it is to surrender to God’s authority; it is to yield to His dominion; it is to give ourselves over to be ruled by Him. One who has never taken Christ’s yoke upon himself and who is not truly seeking to please Him in all details of life, and yet supposing he is resting in Christ, is deceived. – Scott Richardson
Reconciliation: Win over, persuade, restore to friendship, reunite (also: to change and turn from that which caused the division).
Matthew 5:23-24 – “If thou bring thy gift to the altar (come before God to worship), and there remember that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be RECONCILED to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift” (don’t come to worship until reconciled).
